Swapping out tired wood balusters for iron is one of the highest-impact upgrades you can make to a staircase. It instantly modernizes the look, opens up the sightline along the stairs, and pairs with almost any wood newel and handrail combination. The catch — at least historically — has been the install.
The traditional method. For decades, installing iron balusters meant drilling oversized holes in the tread and handrail, mixing two-part epoxy, packing the holes, and dropping each baluster in while trying to keep them perfectly plumb. Then you waited. Epoxy needs cure time, and any baluster that drifted out of vertical while it set was now permanently crooked. Drips on the tread had to be scraped off before they hardened. Replacing a damaged baluster later meant breaking it out and chiseling the cured epoxy free.
It worked, but it was slow, messy, and unforgiving.
