Fireplace Mantels — Different Styles from Evermark at The Home Depot

A mantel anchors a room. It frames the fireplace, gives you a stage for family photos and seasonal decor, and is often the first thing guests notice when they walk into a living room. Choose the right one and the whole room snaps into focus. Choose poorly and even a nice fireplace can feel like an afterthought.

Beyond our core stair parts business, Evermark also manufactures solid-wood fireplace mantels — and they're all available through The Home Depot. Here's a guide to the styles we offer and how to pick the right one for your fireplace.

Two questions to answer first. Before you start picking profiles, narrow your decision with two questions:

1. What's the style of your home and decor? A heavy timber mantel in a contemporary loft will feel out of place; a delicate crown-moulded mantel above a stone fireplace in a craftsman home will look undersized. Match the mantel's visual weight and detail level to the rest of the room.

2. Will you stain it or paint it? This drives wood species and profile choices. If you're painting, paint-grade poplar in a profile that takes paint cleanly is ideal. If you're staining, you'll want a species with character — oak, alder, or rustic timber — and a profile that shows off the grain.

Our mantel styles. Evermark mantels come in several distinct profile families:

Rustic Timber. Substantial, hand-hewn-look beams with visible texture, distressed edges, and warm undertones. Perfect for modern farmhouse, rustic, or lodge-style rooms. Pairs naturally with stone or brick fireplace surrounds.

Traditional Crown-Moulded. Multi-piece mantels with detailed crown profiles along the top edge and dentil or rope details along the bottom. The classic choice for formal living rooms, traditional homes, and rooms with significant millwork elsewhere. Takes paint beautifully — especially in white, off-white, or soft gray.

Contemporary Square-Edge. Clean, simple profiles with sharp 90-degree edges and minimal ornamentation. The mantel becomes a strong horizontal line above the fireplace without competing for attention. Works in modern, transitional, and Scandinavian-influenced rooms.

Beam Style. Solid or built-up beams that read as a single, substantial piece of wood. Less ornamented than a rustic timber but heavier than a contemporary square-edge. A flexible middle ground that suits a wide range of decor.

Sizing your mantel. A few rules of thumb:

Width. Extend the mantel at least 6 inches past each side of the fireplace opening. More overhang reads more traditional; less overhang reads more contemporary.

Height above the opening. The bottom of the mantel typically sits 12 inches above the top of the fireplace opening for wood-burning fireplaces (check your local code) and can sit closer for gas. The lower the mantel, the more grounded and intimate the fireplace feels.

Depth. A 6-8" deep mantel gives you enough room for photos, candles, and seasonal decor without overwhelming the wall.

Finishing. Our mantels arrive ready to stain or paint. For staining, sand lightly with 220 grit, apply a wood conditioner if you're using a soft species, then your stain of choice. For painting, prime first — a quality bonding primer makes the difference between a finish that lasts and one that scuffs the first time someone bumps it.

Where to buy. Every Evermark mantel is available through your local The Home Depot or HomeDepot.com. Ask an associate to help you locate the profile and size that fits your fireplace, or call us at 678.455.5188 — we're happy to help you pick the right one.
